Red hot fashions at the Golden Globes

THOSE female celebrities planning to wear red to the upcoming Oscars may be rethinking their choice after that hue made a remarkable comeback on the carpet of the same name at this year's Golden Globes.

Although the styles varied the knockout colour stole the show from the usual array of sheer, beige and bling normally associated with these Hollywood award ceremonies.

Leading the primary colour charge was Zooey Deschanel in a strapless Oscar de la Renta with sweetheart neckline and ball gown skirt (nicely paired with pearls) swiftly followed by Claire Danes' Versace gown boasting another of the evening's most noticeable trends, the plunging neckline.

Thankfully the latter seemed to be relegated to the women with conservative cleavage rather than the customary ample that seemed to be a prerequisite in awards gatherings gone by.

Kate Hudson's Alexander McQueen creation was probably the best example, with her very trim silhouette setting off the long black gown encrusted with gold embellishment beautifully.

Also wearing McQueen was Nicole Kidman who stuck to her usual column-style structured gown elongating her already svelte frame. A safe but interesting choice also in black.

In amongst the sea of beige and black were a few risk takers, namely Nicole Richie whose sparkling sea-blue long sleeved gown was reminiscent of '50s Hollywood with a touch of Stepford Wives. Her matching frosted blue eyeshadow could have been the deal breaker but she scrapped through thanks to her sheer tenacity.

Other risk takers didn't fare so well, namely Halle Berry whose Atelier Versace gown looked like she had walked past an '80s sofa after it exploded.

In the ill-fitting category Jessica Chastain's toothpaste-coloured Calvin Klein halter neck was plunging in all the wrong places and looked like it could have done with a few extra seams.

Speaking of seams, some of the better fitting gowns belonged to Anne Hathaway, whose dark short hair, alabaster skin and long lean frame was clad in white Chanel perfection, while Naomi Watts lived up to her surname by illuminated the sea of boring frocks with a stunning rust-coloured Zac Posen with the perfect combination of drape and drag. Her carefully coiffed hair the only accessory needed.

Good to see some stylists earned their money this week.
