Queen of Turf reigns with 23rd straight win for Black Caviar

AFTER the record-breaking 23rd straight victory in Saturday's race named after her, no one seemed sure what the future would hold for wonder mare Black Caviar.

Now it appears the legend will carry on after co-owner David Taylor yesterday revealed his preference would be to see the six-year-old race in next month's $1 million Group One Lexus Newmarket Handicap (1200m) on March 9.

Straight after his superstar won the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes in a track record 55.42 seconds, trainer Peter Moody said the mare's connections had several options on the table.

"Where to now?" he said.

"Well, we are going to have a few drinks tonight.

"It's been a big day for me, Black Caviar's come back better than ever and I've trifectaed the first running of the Black Caviar Lightning.

"We will relax and talk tonight and plan where we will go next."

Yesterday, speaking on Sky Racing's Racing Retro, Taylor said while the owners had almost exclusively left decisions on the future up to Moody, his preferred option would be the Newmarket.

"Peter's basically said to us (the owners) what are our preferences?" Taylor said.

"To win another Newmarket would be absolutely sensational and quite frankly I think if she pulls up well this morning, which obviously we think she has, even with 61.5kg in the Newmarket I think she'd give it a real crack.

"To win that race, not taking anything away from the William Reid (1200m), but to win the Newmarket would really be something."

Moody admitted yesterday on RSN's Correct Weight his greatest concern with that option was the fact stablemate Moment Of Change would receive a nine kilogram weight turnaround after finishing second ins Saturday's race.

"I would never say never, we'll get together midweek with the owners and I would suggest everything's on the table at the moment," Moody said.

"Being realistic the next possible option to me is the William Reid but I'm mindful that the Newmarket is a great race and it's on her favourite track.

"There's no doubt in the world that she appreciates racing in a straight line and with the issues she's carried over the years, racing in a straight line is a great benefit to her. I'm mindful of that but I'm also very mindful of the opposition that she would have to meet."

Moody said that it appeared Black Caviar had pulled up well her exertions, with the early signs all positive that she had taken no harm from her remarkable win.

Saturday's triumph took Black Caviar's record to 13 Group Ones, level with Sunline and Tie The Knot, and only one behind record-holder Kingston Town.
