POLICE believe an elderly man who died after a yacht broke its moorings  near Bundaberg during the weekend's cyclonic conditions may have fallen overboard.

The man, aged in his 80s, was on a yacht that broke its moorings at a marina near Targo Street shortly after 2:15am.

The yacht collided with other vessels before drifting downstream on the Burnett River.

The vessel was spotted by police around 8.30am tangled with other vessels but it again broke free and drifted downstream.

The Burnett Heads area was one of the hardest hit by ex-tropical cyclone Oswald on Saturday with widespread devastation after it was hit by one of at least five tornadoes in the region.

In a statement released late Sunday night, police said they were able to reach the yacht around 9am and rescued an elderly woman.

The woman, also in her 80s, was taken to the Bundaberg Base Hospital.

Police conducted inquiries to locate the man before his body was located by a member of the public amongst rocks at Burnett Heads around 11.15am.

Initial investigations indicate the man may have fallen overboard.

Police will be preparing a report for the Coroner.
