GROWING up in a household where both of his parents were teachers, it came as no surprise when Kerry Mulkerin decided to follow in their footsteps.

Having been in the industry for more than three decades, Mr Mulkerin said he still loved going to work every day and teaching young minds.

His dedication to the teaching industry was recognised recently when Mr Mulkerin, the current principal at St Francis' College in Crestmead, was named the Brisbane region's Principal of the Year at the Brisbane Catholic Education awards night.

Mr Mulkerin said it was a real honour to receive the top award on the night.

"I was completely overwhelmed, because I was there with a number of talented peers who were also deserving of this award," he said.

"This was the third time the award had been given out, so I was extremely humbled.

"I know a lot of the other teachers and principals who were there and what they do in their own schools, so to be selected was a real honour.

"I know my mother would have been particularly proud."

Having taught at a number of schools during his career, Mr Mulkerin was appointed the principal role at St Francis three years ago.

He said he had enjoyed every minute at the school.

"My experience here at St Francis College has been heart-warming," he said.

"It has a very unique and lovely community.

"When I do eventually have to leave it, I will be very heartbroken because it is just a welcoming and safe community.

"I have enjoyed interacting with all the parents, teachers and students.

"I want all of these children to the best they can be so when they leave school, they have all the skills and knowledge so they can take their own place in the world."
