POLICE have blamed excessive speed for a horrific crash in which an Ipswich man was impaled by a fence rail.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the crash - a straight section of road just after a sharp bend on Kruger Pde - just before 6.30am yesterday.

A 23-year-old cyclist lay seriously injured by the side of the road near the bend, while the car - an older model Hyundai Excel hatchback - had ploughed into the front fence of a house near the intersection of Henderson St, at Redbank Plains.

Police said the driver lost control as the vehicle went around the right-hand corner, heading south on Kruger Pde, and side-swiped the cyclist, then skidded into the fence.

Inspector Keith McDonald said paramedics worked for some time to try to save the driver's life, however there was nothing they could do.

The rail from the fence had speared in through the front windscreen, diving through the loop of the steering wheel and into the man's chest, before continuing through the front and rear seats and exiting through the rear bumper on the driver's side.

Police confirmed the deceased man was a 31-year-old from Augustine Heights.

The cyclist, a Camira man, was taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital with a broken leg.

His injuries were not life-threatening.

Police spoke to several other motorists who were travelling along Kruger Pde at the time of the crash.

Insp McDonald said initial investigations indicated speed was a significant factor in the tragedy.

"Police have just launched the fatal five campaign and already we've seen a person killed because they were driving too fast," he said.

The usually bustling Kruger Parade had to be completely closed for about four hours while officers from the forensic crash unit began their investigations.

Traffic headed towards Redbank was diverted up Eagle St.

The death pushed Ipswich's road toll for 2012 up to 17.
