Pilot killed in Cape York plane crash

A MAN has died in a light plane crash on western Cape York Peninsula.

Police are investigating, but initial information suggests the aircraft left Bamaga Airport on Thursday bound for Weipa but failed to arrive.

A search commenced on Thursday afternoon and the plane was found crashed at Cotterell River on Friday morning.

The pilot and only person on board, a 62-year-old South Australian man, died at the scene.

Officers from the forensic crash unit are investigating and will prepare a report for the coroner.
