Put pets at the top of your New Year resolution list

Exercise more and eat less is surely the most common pledge that we can easily share with our pets.
Exercise more and eat less is surely the most common pledge that we can easily share with our pets.

DID you make a resolution for the New Year? Or should I say Gregorian New Year?

If it wasn't for a Papal Bull from Pope Gregory XIII in 1582 we might be singing Auld Lang Syne and promising ourselves to exercise more on some other night.

It might have been the Julian calendar, or Chinese New Year (Feb 13 this year) with only the Mayans missing out this year.

There's something to be said for taking a leaf out of our pets' books.

It's just another day, and I'm sure our pets would agree with Goethe's statement that "nothing is more important than this day".

Nevertheless many of us decide to draw a line at the changing of the year and use it to review the past 12 months and recalibrate for the next trip around the sun.

Exercise more and eat less is surely the most common pledge and one we can easily share with our pets as it is we who control how much they eat and how much they exercise.

As with us humans it can be as simple or as complicated as you wish to make it.

In the United States now there are a range of cardio treadmill machines available for keeping your dog in shape, and there are some nifty GPS tracking devices which will not only alert you by SMS and tell you where your dog has wandered off to, but also tracks its activity level through each day.

Or you can use a $5 dog lead, footwear is optional, an old tennis ball and don't forget the good old stick!

Cats love playing with ping pong balls and anything dangling and jiggling. The hardest part is making time!

For the "what goes in the mouth" side of the weight equation, your vet can help if your pet needs to shed some weight.

Medical conditions such as thyroid disease need to be ruled out, then a target can be set (often 15% reduction initially), a diet formulated, and then it's just a matter of self control.

By self, I do mean your self, not your pet's self! And do be careful out walking because 2013 is Chinese Year of The Snake!
