Tenant allegedly terrorised with an axe over rent money

A 51-YEAR-OLD man allegedly wielded an axe as he chased a woman out of her Riverview home.

At Ipswich Magistrates Court, Jeremy Price Keeble appeared in the dock charged with going armed as to cause fear and wilful damage.

It was alleged Keeble had been arguing with a woman over owed rent when the incident took place on July 5.

Magistrate Donna MacCallum said the argument escalated when Keeble allegedly grabbed an axe from the laundry and chased the woman onto a neighbouring property.

The woman ran onto the neighbour's rear-veranda and called for help.

It was alleged Keeble then threw the axe which hit - and damaged - a tiled roof. Ms MacCallum said Keeble shouted abuse at the woman as well as bystanders who were witnessing the incident.

She said he then returned to the victim's residence, where he smashed the front window and broke an assortment of crockery.

After police arrived on the scene, Keeble allegedly admitted he intended to intimidate the victim by chasing her with the axe.

Ms MacCallum rejected Keeble's application for bail on the basis that he was an "unacceptable risk of committing a further offence".

She said Keeble had a history of failing to appear in court as well as a prior wilful damage charge against the same victim.

"It seems his past contact with the courts have had little control over him," Ms MacCallum said.

Even though Keeble had been arguing about owed rent, Mc MacCallum noted he had not been the owner of the property.

He was held in custody and his case was adjourned to July 28.
