Passengers injured as train crashes into bathrooms
UPDATE: Fourteen people have been taken to hospital for treatment following a shock passenger train crash in Brisbane's bayside.
However, there have been no reports of serious injuries.
The train overshot the tracks and crashed into Cleveland station about 9.30am, plunging six metres into into the men's and women's bathrooms.
There were 13 passengers on the train, and five people at the platform at the time.
A woman in the ladies bathroom was lucky to escape without serious injury though District Officer Superintendent Jim Kegh said the male bathrooms bore the brunt of the damage.
"Certainly could have had catastrophic circumstances if a male person had been in the toilets - he certainly would have died," Supt Kegh said.
Rail Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) head Owen Doogan said the incident happened due to a mechanical brake failure.
"Whilst there is an investigation to be undertaken, I am no led to understand that the fault was caused by a brake failure and not human error," Mr Doogan said.
"The RTBU is obviously concerned that this incident has occurred, but is pleased that injuries so far appear to be minor and not as bad as they could have been.
"We will be providing as much support to the driver as possible given his compartment suffered the full impact of the crash."
Earlier, Queensland Rail confirmed there had been an "incident" on the Cleveland line.
"We believe there are no serious injuries, however emergency services and Queensland Rail staff are on site," the statement read.
The Rail Safety Regulator had also been told of the incident.
QR is expected to release a second update before lunchtime.
A local law firm, opposite the station, was being used as a base to treat those injured.
Staff at the firm reported seeing the front of the train lift into the air before it hit the station.
Staff from the Bayside Bulletin newspaper, which is just nearby, were quickly on the scene after being phoned by locals.
The community paper reported that the rail line between Cleveland and Murarrie is closed.
Shore Street near the station is also closed to traffic as investigations continue.
4BC first reported that he Department of Community Safety believed the train was unable to stop at the end of the line at Cleveland about 9.30am.
