Old church opens the door to art
FROM the outside, The Old Baptist Church on Brisbane St still looks like its old self, but appearances can be deceiving.
Anyone who gets a chance to explore the building will see that, on the inside, stained glass windows are the only thing that hints at its past. The space is now dominated by mirrors, metal framing and a stage.
After sitting vacant for years, the church has finally been transformed into an exciting arts space called Studio 188.
The church's future was decided when Ipswich's latest McDonald's outlet was approved by Ipswich City Council, with council striking a deal for the chain to fund the makeover.
THAT Production Company is now using the space to rehearse for a play which opens on Wednesday, called The Fastest Clock in the Universe.
Director Timothy Wynn said the play would remove any remaining religious reverence from the church.
He said it was great to have an intimate and centrally-located space.
"I think it's needed, location-wise and size-wise," Mr Wynn said.
