CHANNEL 10's TV adaptation of Puberty Blues has received a warm reception.

Last night's premiere episode peaked at 1.06 million viewers nationally and was the most popular show in its timeslot among people aged 18 to 49, 16 to 39 and 25 to 54.

In the capital cities, 925,000 viewers tuned in and while it was a bit shy of the magic million mark, the number is seen as a solid first result for the 10-part series.

Set in '70s Sydney, the series follows teens Debbie Vickers and Sue Knight as they attempt to ingratiate themselves into the cool crowd.

The show's supporting adult cast features veteran Aussie actors, including Claudia Karvan, Rodger Corser, Susie Porter and Dan Wyllie.

The show was also a popular trending topic on Twitter last night, with many prominent Aussies showing their support for the locally produced drama.

Megan Gale tweeted: "LOVING Puberty Blues on CH10 right now. From the actors, their performances to the wardrobe, set design and old school lingo #nailedit".

Offspring star Matthew Le Nevez also showed his support on Twitter: "So I'm not in the country but from what I can tell… Puberty Blues is a hit! So proud of many of my friends and colleagues. LoveAussieDrama".

Many were also welcoming an alternative to Australian free-to-air TV's current saturation with reality programming.

Triple J presenter Brendan Maclean tweeted: "Odd how the fictional characters on #PubertyBlues are more realistic than the actual people on The Shire".

Puberty Blues airs Wednesdays at 8.30pm on Ten.
