No booze or women for 90 days

DAN McManus describes himself as an average Aussie bloke, who loves to have a beer and make the most of his weekends.

After a year spent enjoying a party-hard lifestyle, the Ipswich business owner has begun a tough challenge: three months without alcohol or sex.

"It started when me and a few mates bet each other not to drink, and agreed to donate half of the money to charity," Mr McManus said. "I thought I'd make it really worthwhile for a charity and set this 90-day challenge.

"The money will go to the Royal Children's Hospital, and I'll match the first $5000 dollar for dollar."

To show how serious he is, Mr McManus said he would refund money to donors and give $10,000 of his own money if he fails.

The QT spoke to the Westec Civil director yesterday, three days into the challenge.

"It's a struggle already - it is very out of character for me," Mr McManus laughed.

"I'm pretty well at the pub every afternoon and like to party on Saturday night," he said of his lifestyle. "I came out of 10 years in long-term relationships a year ago, and since then I've sort of been making up for that.

I came out of 10 years in long-term relationships a year ago, and since then I've sort of been making up for that.

"But you can't do that forever, so I thought this would be a good thing to try.

"My reputation is in tatters at work and my best mate has joked that he needs to find a new wingman," he said. "I did go to the pub last night and I just had an orange juice, so while they might not think I can do it I'm going to give it a good try."

Mr McManus said people had already pledged thousands of dollars on his Facebook event page.

"I might cop flak, but the same mates have pledged money," he said. "There's massive support - I think about $5000 already."

The page is pending approval, and updates will be available on the Facebook event page "Dan Not Drinking or Taking Part in Any Sexual Activity for 90 Day's" (sic).
