Probability is the chance of something happening.
In our daily lives most future events cannot be predicted with total certainty. The best we can do is say how likely they are to happen, using the idea of probability. Consider these statements: The Australian Diamonds will probably beat the New Zealand Silver Ferns in netball. There is chance of rain today. I am certain I will pass the test.
The likelihood of things such as these occurring can be measured with a number in the form of a fraction, a decimal , a percent, or as odds, or can be expressed in words such as impossible, unlikely, possible, even chance, likely and certain.
In mathematics the concept has been given an exact meaning in probability theory that is used extensively in the areas of mathematics, statistics, finance, gambling, science, and philosophy to draw conclusions about the likelihood of potential events and the underlying mechanics of complex systems.
