Newman hands out $10m in Central Queensland tour

PREMIER Campbell Newman pledged to give the state's regions some much-needed attention as he toured parts of Central Queensland this week.

He put his money where his mouth was by handing out $10 million in community funding.

Mr Newman was in Emerald Friday morning to announce $5 million to help fund improvements for the Nogoa River rail bridge in an effort to protect the town from having to face inundation as it did during the floods of 2008.

The bridge is the first project to be funded under the government's $495 million Royalties for the Regions program designed to help towns struggling to cope with the mining boom.

He then arrived in the Rockhampton town of Gracemere to promise another $5 million to support the cattle industry during disease outbreaks.

Queensland graziers are grappling with an outbreak of Bovine Johne's disease, an affliction that is potentially deadly to livestock.

The Premier told ABC radio he would escape south-east Queensland so he could better spruik the government's work across the state.
