New origin labels for olive oil

OLIVE oil lovers will soon be fully informed about where their oil was produced, after the competition watchdog acted on country-of-origin labels for the food.

Australian Competition and Consumer Chairman Rod Sims said on Thursday the commission would move to provide clear advice about country of origin for olive oil.

But Mr Sims stopped short of criticising the current classification system, saying the problem was "people's understanding of what they mean".

"The problem is they should be looking for a 'Product of Australia' label," he said.
