NDIS legislation introduced into House of Representatives

LEGISLATION to kickstart the National Disability Insurance Scheme was introduced in the House of Representatives on the final sitting day of the year on Thursday.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard introduced the new laws to enact the NDIS trial for 20,000 people around the country on Thursday.

The bill also establishes the NDIS launch transition agency, as well as puts up $1 billion for the initial trial.

But while the introduction of the bill marks the first official step towards the NDIS, action on any areas outside of the trial sites, such as regional Queensland and northern New South Wales, was unlikely before the start of 2014.

Ms Gillard said the new NDIS Agency would work with people with disability in the trial sites to develop a personal plan that identifies their goals and aspirations and recognises their family and friend support network.

Members of the public will have a chance to comment on the initial bill introduced on Thursday, and future bills to expand the scheme beyond the trial sites.
