HATS, sunnies and sunscreen are the must-have items at today's Gold Coast Big Day Out.

The annual music festival is making its second stop at the Gold Coast Parklands today after Sydney's record-breaking heatwave on Friday.

The temperature is expected to hit a high of 29C today before forecasted storms later this afternoon.

Punters who arrived early have been seeking shade and cool-off stations, but keen House Vs Hurricane fans braved the searing sun to see the band open the Orange Stage.

There was a strong police presence at the main gate, with sniffer dogs used to inspect punters.

Nearly 40,000 music fans are expected to pack the Parklands for the music festival's last event at the venue, which is being converted into an athletes village for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Unlike Sydney, today's Gold Coast event has yet to sell out, with organisers tweeting that "strictly limited" tickets are still available for anyone keen to make a last-minute decision to come along.

Today's festival marks the end of the Big Day Out's long 19-year history at Parklands. A new home for the festival is expected to be announced soon.

The 2013 festival features a new Chow Town food area, featuring gourmet fare inspired by Chicago's Lollapalooza.

Tonight, headliners The Killers will play the Orange Stage at 7.05pm while the Red Hot Chili Peppers will close the Blue Stage at 8.30pm.
