MUSEUMS, just like people, are ultimately institutions of collectors.

They hold dear items of historic significance, quirky one-off pieces and memorabilia from a bygone era.

People on the other hand collect for a multitude of reasons: tradition, out of interest or as a part of an unexplainable passionate quest.

All things collecting will be celebrated this weekend when Cobb and Co Museum opens its What Do You Collect exhibition.

The exhibition features the collections of 18 residents as well as items from the state's penultimate collector, the Queensland Museum.

"A lot of people collect something," Cobb and Co Museum deputy director Deborah Bailey said.

"And they do it for different reasons.

"As a museum we are mostly interested in the people behind the collections and the passions behind it."

Collections on show include royal memorabilia, film posters, Olympic items, aprons and military swords.

Items from the Queensland Museum were shipped to Toowoomba from Brisbane.

Ms Bailey said those items were specifically selected by Cobb and Co staff to resonate with the local community.

Items on show include an intricately carved Grandfather clock, a stuffed polar bear and a character costume from Expo 88.

The exhibition opening will be held tomorrow at 2pm as a part of the community day events
