New chapter for J.K. Rowling

LISA Holznagel will be frantically turning the pages of J.K. Rowling's new book today.

The Casual Vacancy, Rowling's first adult-only novel, has been released amid much secrecy.

"I had to sign a confidentiality clause that stated no one could read the book or open the boxes of books before it was released," Ms Holznagel, who is acting manager of Mackay QBD bookshop, said.

"We've had a lot of people asking about the book and we've had a few pre-orders.

"But she (J.K. Rowling) seemed to keep the whole release low key."

This novel wasn't one for the kids, Ms Holznagel said.

"I'm keen to see how she writes this book. From what I've heard it is much different to the Harry Potter books.

"Not much about the story has been given away."

It's not unusual for authors to change genres in their careers.

"I don't think it will hurt her reputation," Ms Holznagel said. "She wants to reach out to a different audience.

"I like the way she writes, it's appealing and interesting."

Ms Holznagel said she was a big fan of the Harry Potter books.

"But I like when authors try new things," she said. "I think tomorrow (today) will be a big day for the book in terms of sales."

The book was released globally yesterday.
