AUSTRALIA will lose Mr Cricket at the end of the summer, but Michael Hussey's four young children will get their dad back - for good.
The 37-year-old batsman will retire from international cricket after playing his final Test against Sri Lanka at the SCG later this week and in the one-day international series against Sri Lanka and the West Indies.
After that, Hussey, who has been in a rich vein of form this summer, scoring three centuries in five Tests, including two against South Africa, (he's averaging 180 after two Tests in the series against Sri Lanka), has a new role to play and it's one he's looking forward to - being a dad.
He said his desire to spend more time with his young family - his children are between six months and eight years old and his youngest, Oscar, was born prematurely - was his primary motivation for announcing his retirement.
Hussey, who was 30 and had scored more than 15,000 first class runs before he got the chance to wear a baggy green for the first time, said it had become hard to be away from his family.
"It's not so much a decision about how I'm playing, I still feel like I'm playing well," Hussey said.
"It's more to do with everything else around the game, time away from home, the constant travel, the constant training, the constant pressures and stresses involved with international cricket as well, that eventually they take their toll on you.
"The last two away trips have been pretty brutal. One was for three-and-a-half months and we found that really tough at both ends, especially at home.
"The next one (India and England) I think I would have been away for seven months of the year, it's just too much. It's not something I really want to do at all.
"I know I'm making the right decision. I'm quite lucky to go out on my terms. Not too many people get to do that."
