Metallica rocks into surf store for boardies, staff stunned

METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Rob Trujillo paid a visit to Rip Curl Coolangatta last Friday leaving store staff star-struck.

The pair were visiting the coast to sample the surf at Duranbah Beach and stopped by the store to pick up some new merchandise.

Rip Curl Coolangatta's Steve Sullivan said the two rock stars were friendly and he was "stoked" to meet them personally.

"It was really good to meet them, you'd think they'd be a bit more rock star, but they just seemed like average guys who loved surfing," he said.

"They were really friendly and down to earth and they love this area of the coast."

Mr Sullivan mentioned he'd got a heads up about the visit from mutual friends pro surfer Jay Phillips and film director Mick Larkin.

"Jay and Mick have surfed with them before and they're mad keen surfers, so he said they were going to come in and get some stuff before they went surfing at D'Bah," he said.

"They picked up some board shorts, t-shirts and hats and since they're family men now, they got some presents for their wife and kids."

Mr Sullivan said his store staff were used to visits from celebrities, but it was still a memorable occasion.

"Everyone in the shop loves Metallica," he said.

"When they came in there weren't many people in the shop.

"I didn't think anyone had seen them, but about 30 people ended up in here.

"They had an entourage of about five guys with them when they first arrived."

He also added that despite being music legends, Kirk and Rob were more interested in having a chat about surfing.

"To be honest we didn't really talk much about that (music)," he said.

"We mainly talked about surfing and stuff with them."
