Man charged with assaulting, torturing woman and child

A WOMAN is being treated for injuries to her face and neck after a man known to her allegedly assaulted and tortured her and a child during a car ride on the Ipswich Motorway on Thursday afternoon.

Police have charged the 34-year-old Ellen Grove man with multiple charges including torture, deprivation of liberty, two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm, assault while armed, armed robbery, fraud, dangerous operation of a vehicle, wilful damage and contravention of a domestic violence order.

In a statement, police said the man allegedly began attacking the woman while riding in the car with them at Redbank and Yamanto.

The man allegedly began to assault the woman before threatening her with a machete, stealing her wallet and further assaulting her.

Police will also allege the man assaulted the child during the incident and caused red marks.

He also allegedly forced the vehicle to stop at the Yamanto exit from the Cunningham Hwy by pulling on the handbrakes.

Police said the woman then drove off to safety when the man got out of the vehicle.

She was treated at the Ipswich General Hospital for her injuries.

The man is expected to appear in Ipswich Magistrates Court today.
