Major police operation targets festival goers

IPSWICH police have charged 57 people with 93 offences following a four-day operation targeting drug driving and drug use at the Earth Frequency Festival held at the weekend.

Operation Oscar Primeval was conducted between February 12 and 15 near where the festival was being staged at Peak Crossing.

Harrisville Police officer in charge Sergeant Matthew Thomson said it was alarming to see 27 drivers returning positive drug tests.

"These results are of significant concern to our community," he said.

"The effects of driving whilst under the influence of drugs can severely impact the ability of the driver, including their reaction time and inability to judge distance and speed.

"During the operation, 31 people were charged with being in possession of dangerous drugs while 12 people were charged with possession of drug utensils and one person was charged with supplying a dangerous drug."

Police conducted more than 2500 random breath tests during the festival but no one was charged with drink driving.

Four people were charged with driving whilst unlicensed or disqualified and three people were charged with driving unregistered or uninsured vehicles.

A further 51 traffic infringement notices were issued for a variety of offences including speeding, drivers using mobile phones and defective vehicles.

Two people were also charged with obstructing police while one person was charged with a public nuisance offence.
