LYING on the side of the road with a broken back and shattered leg, the whirr of a rescue helicopter overhead provided a little comfort to Toowoomba man Brad Staggs.

The Toowoomba dad was taking part in a charity motorcycle ride to raise funds for disability services when he crashed while travelling on the Wivenhoe-Somerset Rd.

He missed an approach to a bridge, skidded and locked up his Honda VT500E motorbike.

Mr Staggs flew eight metres through the air and landed 10 metres below the bridge.

Incredibly he was spotted by a bunch of other riders, not taking part in the charity event, who came to his aid.

"I wasn't overly in pain," Mr Staggs said.

His fiancée Karissa Lindemann suspects shock masked the pain of his broken femur, shattered ankle and broken L1 vertebrae.

Mr Staggs praised the trio of strangers that came to his aid and alerted ambulance officers.

But faced with a climb back to the road, the paramedics opted to call in the RACQ Careflight Rescue helicopter to take him to the Princess Alexander Hospital in Brisbane.

"Brad's outcome was improved because the helicopter was such a smooth ride rather than a bumpy ambulance ride," Ms Lindemann said.

He was admitted to hospital on the day of his accident, September 23, and has remained there ever since.

Although, he has been given a few special "passes" to visit his family in Toowoomba.

"I spent a week in the high dependency unit then I was moved into the orthopaedic ward on October 12.

"I have been up walking in the last few weeks.

"It's coming along in leaps and bounds.

"I have assistance from a frame and someone needs to be there to catch me.

"But it is going well."

Mr Staggs hopes to be home by January 24 - four months and one day after his accident.

Now with his recovery well on track, Ms Lindemann wants to give back to the charity that helped her fiancé.

"Careflight isn't government funded," she said.

"I want to raise $5000 and if I hit that, then I will shave my head for our wedding on March 16."
