Lionel Messie awarded FIFA Ballon d'Or for fourth year

LIONEL Messi won his fourth straight Ballon d'Or yesterday, for the best player in the world, but said he was more concerned with winning trophies with Barcelona.

Messi, who scored a record 91 goals in 2012 for his club and Argentina, fought off the challenge of teammate Andres Iniesta and Real Mdrid rival Cristiano Ronaldo to win the coveted prize at a star-studded FIFA gala in Zurich.

Messi's award lifted him above three-time winners Zinedine Zidane of France and Brazil's Ronaldo but he said while individual honours were nice he was a team player.

"It's nice to beat records but the win for the team is what is important," he said.

"My goals are to win titles with the team, the Spanish league, Spanish Cup or Champions League is more important than any personal records."

Messi was also full of praise for Iniesta, giving the Spaniard credit for him winning the top honour.

"It is incredible to receive this prize once again and it's impressive it makes it four in a row," he said.

"I would like to share this with my Barca teammates - particularly with Andres, who is here with me.

"I am proud to be able to train alongside him every day."

Spain's Vicente del Bosque was named coach of the year, while United States forward Abby Wambach was named women's world player of the year.
