Lion senses a hungry mood

AFL: Brisbane Lion Josh Drummond has urged his side to embrace its favourite's tag and build on its recent form in this weekend's clash with Melbourne at the Gabba.

The Maroochydore-product said aside from a poor second half against Hawthorn, the Lions had been showing some consistent signs during the past month and it was critical they built on those against the Demons.

Some of the strongest signs to date came in the side's 50-point thrashing of the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium last weekend.

"From what I can see, from the actions of the last few days, there's been no letdown at all and I think we're just hungry to continue the momentum," Drummond said yesterday.

"We haven't had that momentum for a few years and if you can get a bit of momentum in this game, you have got to run with it."

Drummond was also conscious of the turnaround from Mark Neeld's men in the past fortnight, however, including last weekend's victory over Greater Wester Sydney.

"Melbourne's confidence would be high - they had a good win on the weekend and have performed consistently for a few weeks now," Drummond said.

"In the last month they have really improved in pretty much all aspects of the game."

Drummond's career has been riddled with injuries in recent years, but he has made his presence felt in the side's resurgence during the past few weeks.

He played a key defensive role following Matt Maguire's departure from the field against the Bulldogs, and could be called upon to fill that role against the Demons should the fullback be ruled out.

Apart from Maguire's injury, it was a night to savour for the club as it celebrated its inaugural Hall of Fame dinner.

"I can speak for myself and say it was terrific for me just to hear the stories of the old Fitzroy supporters and just see how much passion they had for the footy club and now for the Brisbane Lions," Drummond said.

"Our record at Etihad hasn't been great the last few years, so adding those few things up, it was important that we went down there and did the jumper proud.

"Win, lose or draw, we had to walk off there and look each other in the eye and walk into that function that night knowing we did everything we could that afternoon."
