CHRISTMAS lights are a family affair, according to this year's urban residential Kingaroy winners.

Every night cars drive by slowly and many stop to see Dave and Linda Marskell's front yard at 14 Cowrie Dr.

And they know their beautiful displays are being appreciated.

They received a Christmas card from 11-year-old Oscar who wrote in flattering detail just what he and many others thought of the 13 years of colourful displays.

"Thank you very much for always putting in a lot of time and effort into putting up all those Christmas lights," he wrote.

"I beg my parents to walk past your place. I especially love the Santa sitting in the chair. You make a great effort and I guarantee that everyone who sees your lights would love them."

Mr Marskell said the family effort to get the lights up each year was always worthwhile for the pleasure it brought to so many people.

Mrs Marskell said her husband put in three days of intense work to get the lights up and was assisted by their three daughters and a son-in-law.

"We just light up for the community," she said.

And thanks to the addition of solar and LED lights, the power bill only increases by about $100.
