Leaders end year with 2013 election promises

PRIME Minister Julia Gillard has promised Australians "lives of better opportunity" for their children, while Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has promised two million new jobs in the lead-up to the 2013 federal election.

The vague promises came in New Year's Eve addresses to the public from Ms Gillard and Mr Abbott as the nation prepared for a night of celebration on Monday.

Ms Gillard said the Labor Government already had a plan for the nation's future in face of global change and economic uncertainty.

Despite some big challenges ahead, she asked all Australians to come together to "write the next great chapter in our nation's history".

Her address focussed on traditional Labor ideals, including improving education, jobs and opportunity and referenced the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

Mr Abbott said the Coalition had plans to deliver a strong a prosperous economy, lower taxes and more efficient government, in line with Liberal values.

He promised to deliver an extra two million jobs and pledged to explain how in the months leading up to the election.
