PART of Wyaralong Dam near Boonah has been temporarily closed to water-based recreation due to an outbreak of potentially deadly blue-green algae.

Seqwater said the body of water adjoining Lillybrook recreation area at the Western Trailhead has been temporarily closed to activities including boating, canoeing, kayaking and fishing.

It said blue-green algae was a naturally occurring organisms and are amongst the earliest known life forms on this planet but blooms in lakes could pose risks to human health through the production of toxins and odorous compounds.

Seqwater will perform water quality testing and the lake will be reopened once it is safe.
