Killed truck driver a "true Aussie bloke"

KINGSTHORPE man Leo Patrick Ryan spent his final moments talking about his family before he died after his concrete truck rolled near Oakey.

Mr Ryan, 56, was travelling west on the Warrego Hway when he came across traffic which was banked up due to another crash on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said he braked heavily and his fully-laden truck left the road, hit an embankment and rolled about 2.20pm.

Friends, strangers and crash witnesses flooded the Queensland Police Facebook page with comments.

Nadia Gorringe posted she was in a car directly in front of Mr Ryan's truck.

She said if Mr Ryan had not steered his truck off the road it would have hit her family's car. She spoke with him after the crash.

"We spoke for what seemed a lifetime but was only a little while," she wrote.

"You worried about how I was over your own safety.

"You saved my family with a selfless act which cost you your own life. You will forever be in my heart and head. RIP Leo our hero."

Friend Hannah Small shared her memories of Mr Ryan on the police website.

"This man was a very close friend to myself and my family," she wrote.

"His sense of humour and personality was the light of the party. (He was a) true Aussie bloke at heart who loved his family and friends very much."

Police said he drove for Clifton Sand and Gravel.
