Jury says truckie didn't kill boyfriend

Jury cleared Anthony Lancaster
Jury cleared Anthony Lancaster

A TRUCK driver has been cleared by a jury of killing his boyfriend in a hit-and-run accident in Booval.

Anthony Ronald Lancaster had been on trial in the Ipswich District Court charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and leaving the scene of an incident without obtaining help.

The 33-year-old was accused of causing the death of his boyfriend, Simo Romic during an incident where the pair had been arguing.

Crown prosecutor Caroline Marco alleged Mr Romic had been running alongside a truck Lancaster had been driving when the 25-year-old tripped and fell under the wheels of the vehicle.

Ms Marco said a witness saw the truck run over Mr Romic "bouncing up and down as it did so, tilting on two wheels."

As a result, Mr Romic sustained a head injury and died at the scene. After the accident took place, Ms Marco said Mr Romic drove off without stopping.

During his summary, Judge William Everton said the prosecution had argued Lancaster had driven dangerously in the circumstances which led to Mr Romic's death.

He said the prosecution had further argued Lancaster drove off knowing he may have run over his boyfriend.

Judge Everton said defence barrister John Jacob contested that Lancaster was "simply driving off" and that it was Mr Romic's own actions which led to his death.

After a week-long trial, it took the jury less than four hours to return with a not guilty verdict.
