Jared's a silver Tallent
AUSTRALIAN Jared Tallent has won the silver medal in the men's 50 kilometre walk in stifling conditions at The Mall in central London.
It was the second Olympic Games in a row that Tallent has claimed the silver in the 50km walk and when combined with the bronze he scored in the 20km in Beijing - he now has three Olympic medals, the most of any Australian in the sport.
Tallent had a powerful second half of the race to move through the field and finish in a personal best of 3:36:53. He was 54 seconds behind Russian Sergey Kirdyapkin and 23 seconds ahead of China's Si Tainfeng.
"I beat my personal best by two minutes, so it's good. I told myself to keep calm and not to push it early," said Tallent.
"I tried to stay focused throughout and bring it home. The Olympic Games is pretty special for me. To get my third Olympic medal is pretty special. Kirdyapkin really showed his class today."
After being handily placed over the first part of the lengthy walk, Australia's 2007 world champion and former world record holder Nathan Deakes tired badly over the last half of the race and finished 22nd with a time of 3:48.45. Fellow Aussies Luke Adams was 26th in 3:53.41.
