Its time to put the crunch back into discount favourites
THIS blog post is more of a vent than anything… a vent about change. Change is inevitable I know, but sometimes I just don't see the need for it. Particularly when it comes to food!
I don't know if it's just me, but I've always managed to pick favourite foods that not many people like.
Potato in a biscuit, Cherry Coke and tomato Maggi Noodles to name just a few.
And because they're not best sellers, they usually end up disappearing off the shelves.
Some of them haven't disappeared completely - you can find them overseas, online or in small chain stores. But it's just not the same, especially when you have to go hunting for them.
This year, for me, it's been Samboy's Atomic Tomato flavoured chips.
They were discontinued in 2004 but social media protest brought them back in late 2008. But once again, earlier this year, all the large grocery stores in the area stopped stocking them.
I was reduced to searching through small stores and service stations all over Toowoomba. And when I found a few packets I bought them all, despite strange looks from customers and staff alike, when I placed 10 packets of full price chips on the counter.
Last week I got fed up with the situation. Armed with my ABN and credit card I went and purchased three boxes full of my favourite chips at a local wholesaler.
I don't think I've ever been so excited about trying to fit three huge boxes around the two car seats in my tiny hatchback.
So I think I'm all stocked up now, for a few months at least. After relocating the boxes to a corner of my laundry, I was even worried for a moment that I may have bought too many.
But after already making my way through nearly half a box I'm not quite so concerned.
I know some products just never take off, due to poor marketing or poor taste.
But it would be nice to see some of the older well known brands stay (or appear back) on the shelves.
What discontinued product do you miss the most?
