It's official, Barry's a legend
THE AFL has confirmed what everybody who watched footy in the 1960s and 1970s already knew - Barry Cable is a legend.
The champion West Australian rover has become the 24th person given Legend status, using his acceptance speech to praise the AFL for its racial vilification policy.
Cable, who played 405 games at senior level in the WANFL and VFL, including premierships with North Melbourne in 1975 and 1977, won three Sandover Medals as the best and fairest player in the WA competition, as well as three Simpson medals for best-on-ground in three grand finals with Perth.
He also captain-coached East Perth and coached North Melbourne, but his speech focused more on the issue of racial abuse.
"I think it's great (the AFL's racial vilification policy), because people should not be abused because of where they come from or the colour of their skin. I think that people are all starting to understand we're all one, we're all under the same roof," Cable said.
