Hockey stick used in CBD assault

POLICE have charged a man with using a hockey stick in an assault in the Ipswich CBD early Sunday morning.

The 21-year-old from Springfield Lakes was allegedly seen bashing a 19-year-old Leichhardt man in Waghorn St.

It will be further alleged the older man struck his victim's vehicle several times with the stick as he attempted to leave the scene.

The incident occurred about 1.20am and was allegedly observed by police on foot patrol.

Police said the officers also found a large knife while seaching the offender's vehicle.

The man was charged with assault occasioning bodily harm, wilful damage and possession of a knife in a public place.

He is due to appear in Ipswich Magistrate's Court on June 15.

The victim received lacerations, bruising and swelling and was treated at the Ipswich General Hospital.

Investigations were continuing.
