High fire dangers continue across Queensland

THE Queensland Fire and Rescue Service is warning residents to make their homes bushfire ready ahead of continuing extreme and very high fire dangers across the state.

The warning comes as firefighters continued to fight two blazes on Bribie Island and Tin Can Bay on Thursday.

QFRS handed firefighting duties back to a landowner at Tin Can Bay on Thursday after the fire was controlled behind containment lines and not a threat to the community.

Haze from numerous bushfires also burning on Bribie Island could be seen from the mainland as firefighters worked to build containment lines.

QFRS south east region rural operations acting manager Ferg Adrian said while fires in Queensland had not been as devastating as in southern states, the threat remained.

"The combination of high temperature, large amounts of very dry vegetation, low humidity and strong winds makes is very difficult for firefighters to control grassfires," he said.

"While the QFRS stands prepared to assist the community, there is a lot residents can also do to adequately prepare."

Winton and Longreach in the state's south west was the hottest place to be on Thursday with temperatures reaching 45 degrees.
