Hermitude play Parklife
AFTER the release of HyperParadise, Hermitude are heading back to the old formula.
The Sydney based hip-hop duo released the instrumental, sample based album in February, their first to rank in the ARIA charts at no.37.
Speak Of The Devil, the lead single suggested at their poppiest sound to date and landed in triple j's Hottest 100.
Pop wasn't what the pair was necessarily going for.
"We had no idea what we were doing as we were doing it," Elgust, or Angus Stuart as he's known to his parents says.
"We wanted to step away from Aussie hip-hop, or that particular sound and make an instrumental record.
"One of the things with instrumental tracks is that you need to keep the listener engaged the whole way through the song and to do that there are elements of pop that need to be there.
"The album basically took a turn for itself. We wanted to make the music speak to people in a different direction. It was really cool and refreshing."
Talking to Pulse from a studio in Sydney, Elgust says they've got the instrumental album out of their system and they're ready to work with vocalists on album number five.
"We're really looking forward to the prospect of working with different vocalists is a delicious looking one," he says.
Having only just come back from a United Kingdom tour, including a sold out show in London, the guys have only just headed back into the studio so they don't expect to have anything out until the end of next year.
The boys recently tweeted about having a big list of things to get to now they're back on home shores.
The list includes remixes, a film and the new record, but Elgust was tight-lipped on the details.
They've come back from the trip brimming with ideas and inspiration though, he says.
"You're out of your comfort zone when you travel and just open to anything," Elgusto says.
"We found ourselves in a techno club in Berlin for instance - in Sydney I wouldn't go to a techno club.
"Everything's just new and fresh. There's all this amazing, kind of, grimea music genre over there.
"So much new music from different areas; even seeing the different sights. I've got endless notes in my phone."
Hermitude were recently announced on the Parklife tour alongside The Presets, Justice, Passion Pit and Plan B among others.
"We're really excited," he says.
"There's heaps of acts I'm keen to see; The Presets, haven't seen them for ages, Justice, Plan B he should be awesome and Labrinth they should have an interesting set."
If you've been to any Hermitude gigs of late, don't expect to see the same set at Parklife.
"We'll definitely change it up a little bit, we've been working on a new set up so it will be reinvigorated," Elgusto says.
"We'll probably pop in a couple of new jams to make it interesting."
