Hendy helps inspire players to perform at higher level

THE mountains of Colorado could hardly be further from the sun and surf of California's beaches where former surf life saving champion Trevor Hendy would feel right at home.

But the 43-year-old has swapped his togs for thermals in his role as a high performance ambassador with St Kilda on its 16-day high-altitude training camp in Boulder.

Hendy, now a life coach and mentor who spends his time motivating and analysing people, said he believed he could help the club develop a more holistic approach.

"I don't have to get in there and drive things and structure the programs, so that gives me the chance to stand off to the side and watch and observe," he said.

"It's always good to have someone in your corner that's doing that, and I'm really looking forward to making a difference to the guys. The rest of the time I'll be putting my hiking boots on with them, trekking up things and swearing and cursing!"

Hendy said while the sport was foreign to him, he believed willingness and attitude were common principles across all sports.

"Of course the willingness and attitude of the players is important. I think something very special could be created and team bonding will be vital.

"I honestly believe that's the biggest part to winning games, and winning in life; knowing who you are and what you're about and being true to it, so once you've got that in place, then you work on strategy."

One Saints player who didn't board the plane yesterday was Nick Winmar who was told last Friday he was being delisted despite having a year to run on his contract.

The 21-year-old, taken by St Kilda at pick 32 in the 2009 national draft, played two senior games.

He will be eligible to nominate for the pre-season and rookie drafts on December 11.
