Guy goes from Iraq war zone to the cover of a magazine

POSING on the cover of a leading men's fitness magazine seems a far cry from the war in Iraq.

But not for Guy Williams. The 33-year-old Moffat Beach man returned to the Coast 12 months ago after serving in the Australian army in Iraq.

He came back with a new mission - to become an actor.

"I'm proud I've served, I've made a lot of mates along the way who all contributed to what kind of a person I am, but I'm looking for different things," Mr Williams said.

When he embarked on a fitness regime with personal trainer Joseph Coyne, he caught the eye of the Men's Fitness Eat Fit magazine editors and tried his hand at modelling for their spring cover.

The bulked-up body builder shows off his physique in a cooking apron in the magazine's cheeky third edition.

"I've always trained and kept fit with swimming, water polo, union and league, but Joe took me to the next level," Mr Williams said.

"My girlfriend is a yoga instructor so she's been going to class with the magazine in hand to show it off," he laughed.

Mr Williams bought a share in his parents' wholesale milk run businesses before enlisting in 1999.

He was first deployed to Iraq in 2003 where he provided security at sites such as the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's heads of mission residences and the new Australian Embassy.

After returning to the milk run, Mr Williams started to feel the itch and returned in 2006 to take responsibility in a team of 14 protecting the US Defence Department.

But he said a "light bulb moment" spawned his love for acting.

"It was really hectic and I was burnt out over there.

"I need to really push on and do something that I love and for me that's acting.

"Sitting in the middle of an oil field in northern Iraq I thought to myself, is this what you want to be doing or can you chase your dreams?

"I've always loved the cinema and how films can affect people emotionally and physically and I've seen the total opposite side of what the human condition is."

Despite his dominating and bulky physique, Mr Williams admits he is a softie at heart.

His mother proudly dobbed her son in to The Daily to share his story.
