GENETICALLY modified crops will not be given any support by the Australian Greens party leader Senator Christine Milne said on Monday.

Ms Milne told Fairfax Media she was given feedback during her regional tour that reinforced her view to keep genetic modification (GM) out of food production.

Assorted farm groups and plant scientists have backed the development of GM technology, citing the potential create crops able to better tolerate drought, frost or barren grounds.

"I think when the community comes to realise that there are real health issues associated with GMOs (genetically modified organisms), not to mention organic growers actually being put out of business by the fact that there is contamination of organic certified areas as a result of GM trials, that's going to make people even more frustrated," she said.

Senator Milne did not say if any of the health concerns with GM foods were proven.
