'Greatest game of all' expected when Broncos tackle Cowboys

WHOEVER coined the phrase "The Greatest Game of All" must have just finished watching a Cowboys-Broncos match.

These two teams have fought out four classic encounters over the past 12 months culminating in an extra-time victory to the Cowboys last Friday night.

All the games have had twists and turns with the Cowboys winning the games that counted.

The latest win propels the Cowboys into the grand final qualifier while the Broncos start planning their 2017 assault.

Drugs surprise

THE NRL stars have spoken on many issues in the game in Rugby League Week with some answers going to plan and some surprising results coming out of the poll.

It's no surprise that Johnathan Thurston was voted the best player in the game, Cameron Smith the best hooker, Jason Taumalolo the best lock and Joey Leilua the best centre.

One surprise came with 72% saying they knew of a player who has taken recreational drugs.

Another surprise, or more to the point a worry, was the 74% who said they knew a teammate with a gambling problem.

Some other results saw Sam Thaiday as the funniest player, Taumalolo as the hardest player to tackle, Josh Papalii the hardest hitter, Origins should be played on standalone weekends and Origin football has hurt club football.

I hope the NRL is listening.

Grand final boost

THEY say that women's rugby league is increasing at a huge rate.

After the grand finals on the weekend it really showed.

Grand finals in A, B and C grades were set down at Bishop Park with Souths and Burleigh fighting it out for top honours.

A big crowd turned up and witnessed a tough clash with the Bears coming out on top over the Magpies.

Women's football has gradually improved over the years with some big hits, some great attacking play and a little melee thrown in throughout this game.

The Ipswich Jets male teams may not have brought any silverware home this year but the first Ipswich Jets female team (under-16 girls) upstaged the men by winning the Broncos challenge earlier in the week.

Some future stars of the game were on show. Hopefully as the game gets bigger, the Jets can form a team to play in the major competition.

Quick thoughts

BOMBER'S bouquet 1: Extra time is better than golden point and last week's game proved that. Lock it in NRL.

Bomber's bouquet 2: Congratulations to the Southern Stars who have qualified for next year's Cricket World Cup.

Bomber's best: The Cowboys did the right thing defeating the Broncos but the Hawks couldn't get the job done.

This week the Storm will account for the Raiders and the Giants will defeat the Bulldogs.

Who am I?

I was born in Brisbane on March 22, 1920. I served my country in WWII and following a coal mining accident was left a paraplegic. I then turned to sport thru the Paralympics organisation and went to six games winning six gold, three silver and one bronze over three different sports.

Last week's answer: Swimmer Dick Orbell.
