Gatton's big heart for cancer stricken Cobie

AT ONLY 20 years old Cobie Taylor needs lifesaving surgery.

The Gatton girl is in Frankfurt, Germany, where she will undergo gamma knife radiotherapy at a cost of close to $40,000.

Cobie was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer, when she was 15.

However, last week she discovered she had developed pea sized brain tumours.

Gamma knife treatment sees radiation fired at a targeted location of the brain through the use of a surgically fixed helmet. The precise delivery means other areas of the brain can be spared the damaging effects of radiation.

The Gatton community has rallied behind Cobie and her family, with businesses and community groups helping.

The town is collecting money to help the Taylors pay for the treatment as well as travel costs.

According to a post made by Cobie on a community run Facebook page Treatment for Cobie, her radiosurgery is underway.

"It brings us to tears when we look and hear what my family friends and hometown are doing to help save my life and from all of us we sincerely thank you all from the bottom of our hearts," she posted.

The Gatton Supa IGA has led the charge, acting as a collection area for fundraising, since setting up donations through the store on Monday afternoon more than $5800 has been raised by yesterday morning, with more than $1500 raised on Thursday alone.

Co-ordinator for the donations at the store Rachel Knudsen said there had been a huge amount of public support for Cobie.

"Gatton is a small town and Cobie is so well known and liked," she said.

"I launched a Facebook page on Monday and it's got more than 1000 people liking it already to follow what's happening with Cobie and the fundraising efforts."

Alongside donations at the Supa IGA a pre-season rugby league trial game between the weekend's Gatton Hawks and Lowood Stags team saw half of the gate proceeds donated to her along with raffles and fundraisers to be run on the day.

Hawks club president Toby Toohill said the Taylors had a long history with the club.

"We're just trying to do what we can to help out," he said.

"Cobie's family has a long history with us, her partner plays A-Grade for us, her father has coached for us and her brothers have played too.

"We thought with playing Lowood it could be a good opportunity to get a good crowd for her."

A beach volleyball day and a golf day for Cobie are being run while local business The Body Shop at Home are donating all profits from a special pack of soaps to the cause.

Donations can be made to Cobie's treatment at Gatton Supa IGA or to donation tins in Tip Toe Treasures, John O'Brien Toyota, the Lockyer Valley Pharmacy, Lockyer Valley Early Education Centre, Big Dads Pies, Wymans, Kluck Farms, Lisa's Hair with Flair, Gatton Golf Club, Kazam, Yaz Kebabs and McGraths.

Donations can also be made directly to the family with bank account details available on the "Treatment for Cobie" Facebook page.
