Foot chase on Cunningham Hwy

A MAN driving a stolen car sparked a foot chase on the Cunningham Highway this afternoon when he allegedly set fire to the vehicle in front of police.

The bizarre incident unfolded near the South Station Rd turnoff on the highway about 4pm, while police had another motorist pulled over by the side of the road for an unrelated matter.

Officers allegedly had no interest in the man until they noticed him set fire to the vehicle - a Kia Rio - nearby, before running away.

A second police crew was called to the area and the suspect was captured on the median strip.

The 49-year-old man has been taken to Ipswich Hospital after complaining of chest pains.

No charges have been laid, however detectives from the criminal investigation branch are conducting enquiries.
