THE THRIVING community spirit in One Mile will ensure there is support for local legend Ricky Murphy, whose home was destroyed by fire yesterday.

Just two years ago, Ricky, 57, lost his partner Clara and has been unwell since.

But Leichhardt One Mile Community Centre volunteer Vera Short, known as Aunty Vera, said the neighbourhood would rally around him.

Ricky, who was at his sister Laverne's house when the blaze engulfed his Chubb St home, has spent his life helping others and Aunty Vera said he deserved help in return.

"As much as we can, the community centre will help. Ricky has always been a gentleman who would help anybody," she said.

"We will help Ricky because we want to help."
