A RACIST rant on Twitter aimed at Ashley Cole and Ashley Young after they missed penalties for England in the 4-2 shoot-out defeat against Italy in the Euro 2012 quarter-final clash is being investigated by police.

Cole and Young were singled out for abuse in a series of offensive postings by someone calling himself Steve, using @Lapwnage as his Twitter ID.

'Steve' praised Italian star Andrea Pirlo in his tweets adding 'He could give those two black m******* Ashley Young and Ashley Cole a lesson or two.'

He said the two players were 'worthless n******' who 'should be deported to Africa'.

When other Twitter users condemned his remarks, he accused one of being a 'smelly Paki'.

'Steve' later backtracked, tweeting 'Just a joke, you guys need to relax, police know I was kidding around and they won't bother me hopefully.'

That's not the case it seems.

A reply from the West Midlands Police account said "Wrong. Your comments may constitute a public order offence. We have advised complainants how to officially report this to police."

The attacks have been branded as 'appalling and unacceptable' by the English Football Association.

'Steve' could well find himself behind bars for voicing his thought, just like Welsh student Liam Stacey did in March.

He was jailed for 56 days after racially abusing two Twitter users and mocking Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba after he collapsed and almost died during a game against Tottenham.
