Famous diplomat who inspired Hollywood film dies age 88

THE Canadian diplomat who inspired the 2012 blockbuster movie Argo has died.

John Sheardon sheltered American diplomats when 52 Americans were taken hostage at the US Embassy by radical students during the Iranian revolution in the late 70s.

The six diplomats he and then-Canadian Ambassador Ken Taylor saved were given fake Canadian passports and allowed to escape the country.

The 52 hostages spent more than a year in captivity.

Actor-director Ben Affleck turned the story into a movie.

Mr Sheardon was believed to be suffering from Alzheimer's disease.

He died at an Ottawa hospital on Tuesday aged 88.
