WORLD 200m butterfly silver medallist Ellen Gandy is switching allegiance to swim for Australia.

The Bromley-born Brit emigrated to Melbourne when she was 16 but continued to represent the country of her birth.

She was expected to do well at the London Olympics but finished 17th in the heats.

Gandy, who has applied for Australian citizenship will have to miss international competition for a year in order to fulfil criteria for changing allegiance.

The 21-year-old, who has swum for Britain at world, European and Commonwealth level, could compete for Australia for the first time back in the UK at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014.
