FOOTBALL star Alessandro Del Piero has a new goal to aim for - being a succesful owner of a motor racing team.

The Italian World Cup winner, who scored four goals in Sydney FC's 7-1 hammering of Wellington last weekend, has teamed up with American actor Patrick Dempsey to form Dempsey/Del Piero Racing.

The pair is wasting no time in getting to the start line and will have two cars in action in America's Le Mans Series, which begins in March.

The team has also submitted an entry to compete in the famous Le Mans 24 Hour endurance race in June.

Dempsey, who stars in Grey's Anatomy, will be behind the wheel alongside veteran American drivers Joe Foster and Michael Avenatti in the Le Mans race.

Del Piero announced the news via Twitter yesterday.

"I have had a passion for motorsport since I was a young boy growing up in Italy," he said.

"I am thrilled at the opportunity to team with Patrick.

"We expect to compete at a very high level and our central focus will be on winning world championships."
