Dangers of using illegal chemicals
THE Queensland Government has issued a warning on the dangers posed by using illegal explosive mixtures for target practice.
The product Tannerite, a mix of two chemical compounds that form a volatile substance,will explode when struck or shot at.
The notice from the State Government's Explosives Inspectorate stated "Some Queensland shooters are using products containing explosives for target practice".
"Tannerite includes ingredients that are classed as explosives - and it is illegal in Queensland to use explosives for target practice."
One website selling the compounds describe them as being apparently being safe in the presence of fire or electricity.
However, to create the exploding target, the two must be mixed together - and manufacturing explosives carries a heavy fine.
In Queensland, mixing, possessing or moving these ingredients could earn a $40,000 penalty or six months in prison.
Sporting Shooters Association Queensland president Geoff Jones said he had never heard of it nor had he been approached by buyers to supply it.
"I would hope the vast majority of our people aren't interested in it, to be honest," he said.
"In the actual performance of their shooting activities, there is no need for it.
"Just for the sake of making an explosion, it's a bit pointless."
Department of Mines minister Andrew Cripps said tannerite could detonate when handled, potentially wounding or maiming the user.
"Tannerite contains ammonium nitrate and other ingredients which are classed as explosives and are very dangerous," Mr Cripps said.
"While the overwhelming majority of Queensland shooters are acting responsibly, I'm concerned some recreational shooters may be importing Tannerite through the internet.
"Claims by some sellers that Tannerite and similar exp losive target products are legal are simply false.
"It is illegal in Queensland to buy, sell, manufacture or possess these explosive products.
"Not even licensed shooters, rifle ranges and clubs can legally use them and no explosives licence will be issued for their use."
