A MAN who crashed his car at a Brassall unit complex after suffering a heart attack has died in hospital.

The 65-year-old Ipswich man was rushed to the Princess Alexandra Hospital on Friday morning after losing control of his vehicle and hitting a fence.

He had been in the intensive care unit until Monday afternoon, when family members made the decision to turn off his life support.

He passed away a short time later.

Paramedics were called to a unit complex on Hayes St about 6.40am on the morning of the crash.

According to witnesses, the man's Ford Falcon side-swiped another vehicle before revving loudly and slamming into a timber fence - wedging up against the edge of a concrete driveway.

The vehicle crashed only 20m from the front of the deceased man's brother's house, where he had been visiting.

Neighbour Phil Unwin, a former firefighter, saw the driver lying face down next to the vehicle, and desperately tried to roll him onto his side before paramedics arrived.

Mr Unwin also noticed the man did not have a pulse.

Paramedics worked on him for about half an hour, eventually taking him to hospital in a critical condition.

According to the man's brother, the badly injured driver survived another heart attack on the way to hospital.

A post mortem examination will be carried out in order to establish whether the man died as a result of injuries from the crash or his pre-existing health problems.

Police have confirmed his death will not be included on the list of road fatalities because it occurred on private property.

So far this year, 10 people have died as a result of crashes on Ipswich's roads.
